Academic Research
Main research areas include Data Intelligence and Social Network Computing. Has led over 60 national, ministerial, provincial, and major industry-sponsored research projects, including Key Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Research Topic of the National Key R&D Program, Team Project of the Guangdong Natural Science Foundation. Achieved a series of theoretical and applied results, with over 100 papers published in prestigious journals and conferences such as TPAMI, TKDE, AAAI, SIGIR, VLDB, IJCAI, WWW, and more than 10 books. Representative achievements: Trademark Image and Text Intelligent Retrieval System, Temporal Knowledge/data management software TempKDB, Intelligent Fiscal Salary Management System based on Temporal Knowledge, and SCHOLAT (a scholar centered academic social network).
Led the development of China's Trademark Image and Text Retrieval System (1992–1993). Proposed and implemented a trademark image-text database system. Supported by the National Trademark Office, it was developed into a standalone product and promoted nationwide. This project was a subsystem of the Administration for Industry and Commerce Information System led by Prof. Li Weihua (then Vice President of Wuhan University) and passed appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education in late 1992 (Academician Li Wei served as Chair of the appraisal committee).
Led the development of an intelligent salary management system for government institutions and public service units based on temporal knowledge reasoning (1998–2004). Main innovations included algorithms for automatic salary determination using temporal logic. Adopted by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Finance and Department of Personnel in 2000, it pioneered unified fiscal salary distribution in China. Listed as a key achievement of reform in the 2004 Guangdong Provincial Government Work Report, it won the First Prize of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award in 2005.
Conducted research and applications in temporal databases, pioneering the field of temporal knowledge engineering in China (1999– ). Authored China's first monograph on temporal databases. Responsible for the temporal database chapters and entries in the CCF Technical Committee on Databases' *Encyclopedia of Databases* and *Advances in Database Technology*. Released the TempKDB software component, which has been included as entries in Wikipedia, Baidu Baike, and chapters in multiple textbooks, widely downloaded and cited. Related work received the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education (2006) and the First Prize of Guangdong Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Award (2008).
Proposed a human-centered social network model (core idea: providing personal data space carriers for users, enabling content-driven effective social interaction, enhancing the credibility of social connections). Developed SCHOLAT (a scholarly social network platform) based on the above model; launched in Jan 2009, it now has 230,000 active registered users from over 5,000 domestic and international institutions (including all Project 985 universities). Now SCHOLAT has become a unique generator of educational big data and China’s most influential scholar-centered academic social network. Leveraging SCHOLAT’s data infrastructure, developed a scholar knowledge graph and a scholar-specific large model via multi-source data fusion; constructed a scholarly knowledge graph with billions entities and relationships, as well as a multi-agent collaborative intelligence service platform.
Student Supervision
Has supervised over 200 graduate students (including more than 60 Ph.D. candidates). Most supervisees are active in the IT industry domestically and internationally; some have become national/provincial-level talents, doctoral supervisors, or deans at "985/211 Project" universities.
