Dr. Zhong is an associate professor (Research) and PhD supervisor in Hainan University, China. He earned PhD from Hunan University, and worked as a postdoc in Dalian University of Technology. He has more than 20 peer-reviewed international journal articles, with more than 2,000 citations on Google Scholar and an h-index of 12, while these research works were published in well-known journals such as Knowledge-Based Systems, Expert Systems With Applications, Applied Soft Computing, Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, Neural Computing and Applications, etc. He is selected as World's Top 2% scientists list in 2025, Higher-level talents (Grade D) in Hainan Province. He also serves as an editor-in-chief of Journal of Computing Intelligence, editorial members of Current Innovations and Emerging Technologies, editorial member (young career) of Natural Science of Hainan University, and reviewers for more than 50 international journals.

Dr. Zhong and collaborators published the original search called Beluga whale optimization (BWO), simulating the behaviors of beluga whales. This paper was selected as an ESI highly cited paper (top 1%, last 36 months) and ESI hot paper (top 0.1%, 16 months), received 1,000+ citations from Google Scholar, 700+ citations in Web of Science, and selected as one of top-cited papers in Knowledge-Based Systems. Furthermore, BWO has been used in more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, and has been discussed or applied by several leading professors. Dr. Zhong and other professors proposed a powerful metaheuristic algorithm called Starfish Optimisation Algorithm (SFOA). SFOA indicates its excellent performance on benchmarks by comparing with 100 different optimizers, which achieves 95 wins in accuracy and 97 wins in efficiency. This paper received 400+ citations on Google Scholar.
