活动总结：

在苏州大学精心组织和安排下，VLDB中国数据库学院于2002年9月28日正式成立并举行了首期开学典礼。苏州大学校长、职能部门领导、数据库学院的组织者及教师代表出席了开学典礼。开学典礼由本次组委会主席朱巧明教授主持，苏州大学校长钱培德教授、南京大学徐洁磐教授、苏州大学科研处长崔志明教授、VLDB中国数据库学院院长陆宏钧教授分别致辞，并宣读了VLDB基金会和中国数据库专委会主任王珊教授的贺信。开学典礼结束后进行了合影。

本次课程学习共有报到学员78名，来自全国20多个地区50多所高等院校和科研单位, 绝大部分是青年教师，还有部分博士生和硕士生。主讲老师分别是香港中文大学于旭教授，澳大利亚昆士兰大学周晓方教授及香港科技大学陆宏钧教授。

整个课程学习过程中，老师讲得十分精彩，学生听得非常认真，气氛特别活跃。每门课程结束时，都进行了测验，成绩全部合格。最后举行了毕业典礼。毕业典礼由武汉大学彭智勇教授主持，VLDB中国数据库学院院长陆宏钧教授和苏州大学计算机科学与技术学院院长朱巧明教授分别致辞，并向学员颁发了毕业证书。中国人民大学博士生高凤荣代表全体学员发言。

SUMMARY:

       Under support of Soochow University, theopening ceremony of VLDB Database School (China) was held in Suzhou. ProfessorZHU Qiaoming from Soochow University emceed the ceremony. Professor QIAN Peide,the president of Soochow University, Professor XU Jiepan from NanjingUniversity, and Professor CUI Zhiming, Director of Science and TechnologyDivision of Soochow University, and the President of VLDB Database School(China), Professor Hongjun Lu presented their talks in the ceremony. The VLDBEndowment, and Professor WANG Shan, Director of Database Society at CCFpresented their congratulatory letters for the opening of VLDB Database School(China). After the ceremony, the first summer school followed immediately.

       There were totally 78 attendees for thefirst summer school, and they are mainly young faculty members and graduatestudents from more than 50 institutions all over China, covering 20 provinces.At the end of each lectures in the summer school, there was an examination forall attendees. In the graduation ceremony emceed by Professor PENG Zhiyong fromWuhan University, the attendees were conferred certification letters.
